At Oubre Orthodontics, we want to remind you to always wear your orthodontic retainer. Although your braces have been removed, your orthodontic treatment is not finished. Your retainer is an important step in the process to straight, beautiful teeth. For a minimum of 24 months, your teeth will not be rigidly set, and you will be responsible for consistently wearing your retainers, and beyond that teeth still have the potential to relapse back to their original position. Our Lafayette orthodontists have specifically designed your orthodontic retainers to keep your teeth in place and prevent them from shifting.

Why Do I Need an Orthodontic Retainer?

Why Do I Need an Orthodontic Retainer?Retainers are an important part of your orthodontic treatment. Once treatment is complete, we want your teeth to stay aligned in the correct position. This is where retention comes in. Retainers keep your newly straightened teeth in the correct position. If you do not wear your retainer, your teeth will shift back to their original positions and will need more orthodontic treatment. At Oubre Orthodontics, we want to avoid this and keep your teeth straight from the moment the braces come off. Retainers are used for all patients and are necessary after braces and Invisalign.

Reasons to Wear Your Retainer

Our Lafayette orthodontists want you to wear your orthodontic retainer for the following reasons:

  • Stabilizing Your Bite: When your braces or Invisalign are removed, the soft tissues in your mouth and bones still need time to adapt to their new position. By continually and consistently wearing a retainer, your tissues and bones will stabilize and resist any shifting that could potentially occur.
  • Wisdom Teeth: For most patients, they will receive early orthodontic treatment during their preteen and teen years, meaning right around the time that wisdom teeth show up. By wearing your retainer, you will ensure that the eruption of wisdom teeth will not move your straight teeth out of their new position.
  • Maintain position within Jaws & Gums: During orthodontic treatment the braces or aligners will work to not only straighten your teeth, but we also position your teeth ideally within the jaw bones and gum tissue to maintain healthy and stable tooth position. Your retainer will work to maintain this position along with allowing the teeth to strengthen and stabilize over time once treatment is completed.
  • Prevent More Orthodontic Treatment: By wearing your retainer every day and night, you will prevent your teeth from shifting, ultimately preventing more orthodontic treatment.
