Why You Should Consider Metal Braces

Metal braces are probably what you first think of when you hear the words “orthodontic treatment.” It’s for a good reason too – metal braces offer a proven and time-tested orthodontic treatment that’s been a favorite of patients for many years. This efficient treatment is capable of fixing even some of the most complex orthodontic problems that other treatments, such as ceramic braces and Invisalign, aren’t always able to.

The downside of metal braces is that they’re more visible than other orthodontic treatments, though modern technology has improved to make current metal braces smaller and more aesthetically appealing. As a bonus, you’ll even be able to pick out what color that you want your elastics to be, which can give your braces a cool, new look.

Taking Care of Your Metal Braces

One of the biggest lifestyle changes that you’ll have to make when you have your braces put on is that you’ll now have to spend extra time and effort taking care of them. Taking proper care of your braces is important in making sure that your oral hygiene is at its optimal level and your orthodontic treatment will be a successful one. Here are a few of the key things you’ll have to do when you’re wearing braces:

  • Brush and Floss Regularly – Brushing and flossing regularly is something that most patients already do, although now you’ll have to put a little more care into the task. While brushing twice a day will typically suffice, you’ll now want to brush four times a day (once after each meal and once before bed) when you’re wearing braces. The reason for this is because braces have many crevices where food can get trapped and then cause tooth decay and other oral problems over time. Brushing and flossing may take a little extra time since you’ll have to maneuver around the braces, but it’s definitely well worth it!
  • Avoid Harmful Foods – You’ll also need to avoid certain foods as well since they can potentially cause damage to your braces. The first kind of food that you’ll want to avoid is hard food. The reason for this is that hard foods can sometimes break the wires or brackets in your braces. The other main type of food that you’ll want to avoid is sticky food. Sticky foods can get stuck in your braces and tug on the wires and brackets, which can sometimes loosen them or even pull them off.
  • Visit Your Dentist and Orthodontist – Obviously, you’ll need to visit the orthodontist throughout the treatment to make sure that it’s going just as planned, but just because your braces have been applied doesn’t mean that you can skip out on your regular visits to the dentist. Visiting the dentist once every six months is vital in making sure that your teeth stay healthy and free of dental problems during the orthodontic process.
