Clear Braces

clear bracesClear braces (also known as ceramic braces) are a perfect alternative to traditional metal braces for those patients who are more concerned with what they’ll look like while wearing braces. They work in the same manner as metal braces, only the brackets of clear braces are made of a translucent ceramic material that blends into the color of the patient’s teeth. This allows the braces to be much less apparent and provides patients with a more discreet orthodontic treatment. In fact, many adults and professionals (and even some celebrities) love this treatment because it’s often hard to tell that they’re even wearing braces.

While the aesthetic appeal of clear braces is undeniable, the downside to them is that the brackets are less durable than metal braces. Also, while the brackets of the ceramic braces won’t stain, the elastic bands that keep them attached to the archwire can stain and become apparent if they’re not regularly changed. Still, the ability to have an orthodontic treatment that’s much more inconspicuous is well worth any of the minor, potential downsides.

Taking Care of Your Clear Braces

When you begin wearing your ceramic braces, you’ll quickly learn that you’ll need to make new lifestyle changes to accommodate your orthodontics. Taking care of your braces is crucial if you want to help ensure that your treatment is a success. We recommend following these useful guidelines to do so:

  • Brush and Floss Consistently – While you should hopefully already be brushing regularly, it becomes even more important to do so when you wear clear braces. Braces have many nooks and crannies where food particles and bacteria can get trapped so you’ll need to be persistent with your cleaning. We recommend brushing four times a day (once after every meal and then again before bed). You’ll also want to floss daily. However, the wire that goes across your teeth can make this task more difficult. If you need help flossing, we suggest using a dental device, such as a floss threader, to make it much easier.
  • Avoid Harmful Foods – When you wear ceramic braces, you’ll need to avoid certain harmful foods because of the damage they can cause to your braces. The two main types that you should avoid are hard foods and sticky foods. Hard foods can potentially break the wires or brackets of your clear braces. Sticky foods can get stuck in your braces and tug on their wires or brackets, loosening them or even pulling them off completely.
  • Visit Both Your Orthodontist and Dentist – During your treatment, you’ll need to periodically stop by to visit your Lafayette and Youngsville, LA orthodontist to make sure that your treatment is progressing as planned. This doesn’t mean that you can skip out on going to the dentist though! Your semiannual visits to the dentist are critical in making sure that your teeth, gums, and mouth are healthy so that the orthodontic treatment can proceed smoothly.
